Understanding Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs)

In Pennsylvania, Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) provide care across various levels, including independent living, personal care, and skilled nursing, as your needs evolve over time. These communities are regulated as insurance products, not real estate purchases, so it’s important to know exactly what levels of care are offered on their campus. Many CCRCs offer independent living with the option to transition to personal care, where services like meal preparation and medication management are provided, and some even have on-site skilled nursing facilities for more advanced care.

Before choosing a CCRC, be sure to research the quality of care they offer. You can use resources like Medicare's Nursing Home Compare or Department of Health records to see how well a facility has performed in inspections and whether there are any concerning deficiencies. Contracts for CCRCs can be complex, with different agreements that may offer partial refunds or none at all. For instance, some contracts allow for refunds based on the length of stay, while others offer no refunds but may lock in a fixed monthly fee. It’s also important to understand that the CCRC typically makes the final decision on when you move from independent living to higher levels of care, though the process may involve family and healthcare professionals.

Finally, consider whether the community’s social environment suits your lifestyle. Some people thrive in CCRC's due to increased socialization and care coordination, while others may feel out of place in an older, more homogenous population. To help with your decision, try a respite stay or speak with current residents to get a better sense of the community's culture.
